The Pegasus Bridge Show
As part of the commemoration of PROJECT 65, it was decided to present a performance telling the story of the daring assault on the two bridges in Normandy. Michael Bawtree was commissioned to create the show, which he wrote and performed himself. It was produced by General Sir Robert Pascoe KCB MBE, assisted by Major Michael Massy-Beresford, all three being former officers of the Oxford and Bucks. Technical support was provided by Lee Emms. A soundscape was created for the show by composer Sean Kemp, and a brass quintet from the band of The Rifles provided music in the lobby. Several hundred people, including veterans of the operation and their relatives, enjoyed performances in Bath, Sandhurst, Oxford and London during November 2008. The actor Richard Todd, who landed by parachute close to the bridges shortly after their capture - later playing the role of John Howard in the film The Longest Day - attended the performance at Oxford’s Town Hall.
This DVD recording of the show, produced in response to popular demand and as a further fund-raiser for Project65, was created in the studio of Canadian film-maker David Sheehan, who both shot and edited the production in collaboration with Michael Bawtree.
Michael Bawtree
was born in Australia, grew up in England and has made his home in Canada, where he has had a distinguished career as a stage director, writer, actor and educator. He was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002 for services to the community.
